I'm an illustrator based in the UK. After a radical career change, I now work as a freelance illustrator of children's books. Formerly, I was an NHS clinical psychologist for 12 years. Perhaps this is why I love thinking about characters' reactions to one another and how the emotional landscape unfolds with the narrative.
The whirlwind of fun, colour, experimentation and mark-making - that is the Cambridge MA - has deepened my love of illustrating for children. I enjoy pairing intense earthy palettes with saturated hues and balancing the playful with the dramatic. I love lighthearted stories and quirky character interactions which carry important messages. My inspiration often comes from my two young children and spending lots of time being very silly.
Sketching from observation and imagination is where I explore the story concepts. This is usually where I start, bringing text and layouts together
Once I have a character to bring to life, I play with the expressions, moods and emotions to develop a depth of connection that the reader can engage with.
Having spent many years as a psychologist in a previous life, I love the 'people' part of my work and getting to know my clients. I see each commission as an opportunity to learn, understand and build connection.
After all, making children's picture books together should be fun!
